2009 BCE Festival Schedule

June 28: Reflections: "The Passing of the Torch": The compositions of Robert Schumann, one of the Romantic era's most celebrated and tragic figures, inspired generations of composers long after his death. A close friend and ardent admirer of both Schumann and his wife Clara, Johannes Brahms inherited the torch of Romanticism and held it until the end of the century when it passed to Brahms' devotee and protégé Antonín Dvorák. The ensemble will perform Schumann's Piano Quintet, Brahms' Rhapsody in g minor and Dvorák's Terzetto. Learn more

July 1: Reflections: "1795-1825: What a Difference 30 Years Makes": The ensemble explores the evolution of strings and piano in chamber music by three great German composers. From Haydn's Gypsy Rondo String Trio (1795), to Beethoven's String Trio in G Major (1798), to Mendelssohn's Piano Quartet No. 3 (1824), this concert will highlight the rapid and groundbreaking compositional changes that took place over a mere 30 year period. July 6: Reflections: "Falling Bodies": Co-commissioned by An Appalachian Summer Festival and Nine Circles Chamber Theatre in celebration of the festival's 25th anniversary, Falling Bodies integrates actors and musicians in an imagined meeting between the 17th-century "father of modern science," Galileo Galilei, and the 20th-century author of Survival at Auschwitz, Primo Levi. First seen during the 2008 festival, it returns after a maturing process that included more workshops and sold-out performances in the US and Italy. Written and directed by Jonathan Levi; music by Bruce Saylor. Learn more

July 15: Reflections: "Changing Keys": Ten years ago, Canadian artist Elma Johnston McKay began to craft a set of keys inspired by paintings and stories. Accompanied by images of McKay's Keys, Gil Morgenstern and Donald Berman weave a musical program of Beethoven, Schumann, Cage and Gershwin with readings of texts from the parables of Kafka, the diaries of Casanova and the dinner-table anecdotes of Isaiah Berlin. Music, words and image combine to reflect on the ancient symbolism of keys as agents of transition. Texts arranged by Jonathan Levi. Learn more

July 20: Founders Night: A reunion concert featuring flute trios by Haydn and Carl Maria von Weber, as well as Brahms' timeless masterpiece, the Piano Quintet in f minor. Following this performance, please join us in recognizing the festival's founders, whose vision and generosity created An Appalachian Summer Festival, and who supported it as it grew to become one of the nation's leading summer arts festivals. The Broyhill Chamber Ensemble

The Broyhill Chamber Ensemble is an extraordinary association of internationally acclaimed musicians which, in association with Nine Circles Chamber Theatre and its international Reflections series, presents an alternative to the conventional approach to chamber music programming.

Reflections presents solo and chamber music together with art, poetry and prose from around the world in combinations that both reflect upon one another and invite the audience to reflect anew on universal themes. The ensemble's flexibility of instrumentation and great variety of repertoire make it the ideal group for exploring the full spectrum of chamber music's expressive palette and experimental performance. According to Broyhill Chamber Ensemble Artistic Director Gil Morgenstern, "The Reflections series continues the well-established tradition of exploring both Old World masters and the less familiar but masterful works of contemporary artists. From sublime compositions created in the midst of horror and terror, to music inspired by painting and sculpture, each piece on select programs will reflect and refract the ones surrounding it in an interactive and intimate setting." Whether in traditional concert format, in residency or in its Reflections series, the Broyhill Chamber Ensemble steps outside the customary performance boundaries by presenting programs that marry the intimacy of chamber music with the power of theatre.

In addition to An Appalachian Summer Festival, Reflections is presented in New York, Pennsylvania, Florida, and Florence and Capri, Italy.

Acclaimed for his artistry and technical brilliance as soloist with orchestra, in recital or as a chamber musician, violinist Gil Morgenstern has performed all over the world to overwhelming critical praise. Mr. Morgenstern is the artistic director of the Broyhill Chamber Ensemble, the co-artistic director of Nine Circles Chamber Theatre, an organization dedicated to exploring the collaborative nature of inter-disciplinary performance, and the artistic director of performance series in New York City, Florida, Pennsylvania and Florence, Italy. He has been the subject of numerous television and radio shows and he can be regularly heard on NPR broadcasts. Mr. Morgenstern and the Broyhill Chamber Ensemble record for the MMC and Koch International Classics label.

The Broyhill Chamber Ensemble Concert Series is sponsored by the Broyhill Family Foundation (in memory of Faye Broyhill), the R.Y. and Eileen L. Sharpe Foundation, and the Muriel and Arnold Rosen Endowment for the Arts. This program has also been underwritten in part through the generous support of Allene Broyhill Stevens, Budd and Nanette Mayer, McDonalds of Boone/Venda Lerch, Peter and Joni Petschauer, Neil and Nancy Schaffel, and Shirley Stein Spector.

Under the direction of Morgenstern, An Appalachian Summer Festival's acclaimed resident chamber group has been setting exceptional standards of artistic integrity for more than two decades. The ensemble has built a stellar reputation, in part by their unconventional approach to programming chamber music. The Press Journal of Vero Beach, FL, raves that the ensemble is "superb, with the musicians seeming to act, even breathe, as one." The ensemble records for the MMC and Koch International Classics labels.

Members of the Broyhill Chamber Ensemble have won top prizes at many of the world's most prestigious competitions, including the Queen Elizabeth of Belgium Competition, the International Flute Competition in Paris and the Washington International Violin Competition. Members of the Ensemble have appeared as guest artists with virtually every major American orchestra and at numerous festivals including Tanglewood, Ravinia, Caramoor, Santa Fe and Spoleto. Widely recognized for their extraordinary inventiveness as well as the breadth of their repertoire, the ensemble's popular recitals are aired annually on National Public Radio. The group frequently commissions composers to create new works for diverse combinations. The Broyhill Chamber Ensemble's recent collaborations include original programming with the Smithsonian Institution and leading choreographers.

The Broyhill Chamber Ensemble's Reflections series is produced in association with Nine Circles Chamber Theatre.
