Pascal and his genial assistant Félipe are middle-aged men leading humble but enjoyable lives digging wells in the French countryside. Pascal hopes to extend his young daughter Patricia’s hand in marriage to Félipe, but Patricia prefers the rakish pilot Jacques. But Jacques is soon called away to war, only to leave Patricia carrying his unborn child, and face the day-to-day struggles created by their actions. When she finds that no one believes her story, she is realizes the shortcoming of alternative options and turns toward Félipe.
