After successfully debuting the competition in 2011, the festival, in partnership with the Hayes School of Music, proudly presents the fourth season of the Rosen-Schaffel Competition for Young and Emerging Artists.
During the spring of 2014, contestants submitted recordings of their work and a panel of judges selected eight finalists to compete in a public performance. During the final round on July 13, jurors will choose three top prizewinners and the audience will select and Audience Choice Award Winner. The first prizewinner, in addition to a cash prize, will receive the opportunity to perform with conductor Gerard Schwarz and the Eastern Festival Orchestra during the following season of An Appalachian Summer Festival.
This year’s competition jurors are Gerard Schwarz with the Eastern Festival Orchestra, Robert Moddy with the Winston-Salem Symphony, Jacomo Bairos with the Amarillo Symphony Orchestra and Roger Kalia with the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra.

About the competition founders
Festival founders Arnold and Muriel Rosen believed strongly in providing opportunities for young musicians to develop their talent through education and public performance. This belief, championed now by a new generation of the Rosen family, is a vital part of the festival mission and identity.
