The unique and powerful artistic entity that is Dance Theatre of Harlem brings new life to the art form of ballet with an extraordinary legacy of providing opportunities for creative expression and artistic excellence.

Founded in 1969 by Arthur Mitchell and Karel Shook, the Dance Theatre of Harlem Company—comprised at that time of African American artists barred from U.S. ballet companies because of the color of their skin—became an expression of human excellence that broke down barriers and inspired millions.

Now under the leadership of Artistic Director Virginia Johnson, former Prima Ballerina, and Executive Director Laveen Naidu, the renewed Company offers a range of education, community engagement and audience development activities—all with their signature quality, excitement and artistic authority.
